Lebônê

Light + Energy = Opportunity

Lebônê Solutions, Inc. is a social enterprise working in off-grid energy delivery and lighting technology. The mission of Lebônê is to help end the energy and lighting crisis in Africa by identifying and harnessing emerging technologies, developing and adapting them for the African market, and delivering them to rural villages in an innovative and accessible manner. The group was incubated under the tutelage of Professor David Edwards at The Idea Translation Lab at Harvard.

This past summer, four of us traveled to an off-grid village in Northern Tanzania, where we conducted a successful pilot study of our fuel cells. It was an incredibly valuable experience, and we were encouraged by the performance of the fuel cells, but more importantly by the difference that electric light made in the lives of ordinary people and all the lessons we learned from Africans. You can read more about our experience in a recent MIT Technology Review article.

Lebônê won a $200,000 grant from the World Bank! Two Lebônê team members presented our proposal to an international jury panel in Accra, Ghana, and we were selected as a grant recipient. This is very exciting news and we are incredibly grateful to the World Bank, IFC, and all the other Lighting Africa participants.

Lebônê works on comprehensive solutions to the pressing problems of developing countries. We work towards independent and long term technology innovations as well as more proximate business innovations that we hope will help solve the technology distribution issues in Africa. We are in partnership with the Namibia Connection Youth Network, which will provide on the ground support for our full-scale implementation.
